Port Vale  4

Walsall    0

Vale Reserves put last week's 5-0 defeat at Coventry behind them at last night when they inflicted a rout of their own beating Walsall 4-0 at ValePark.

The Valiants took the lead in the 14th minute when a Luke Chapman corner flew into a crowded area. A head went up to fire the ball home and after much deliberation it was decided defender Keith Lowe had the final touch.

Vale stretched their lead to two on 23 minutes. Good link up play between midfielders Joe Cardle, Jason Talbot and Ross Davidson saw Cardle fire home eventually.

Kevin Betsy was Walsall's main threat and he brought some fine saves from Vale keeper Chris Martin, as did the Saddlers' Aaron Brown whose header was tipped over the bar.

Vale nearly gifted Walsall a goal when Charlie O'Loughlin put Martin under pressure when he switched the ball back to the keeper but Martin got to the ball just as the Betsy was breathing down his neck.

Walsall changed personnel at the beginning of the second half with Troy Deeney replacing Alex Nicholls and Darryl Westlake replacing Darren Wrack.

Walsall had the chance to pull a goal back after referee Uriah Rennie awarded the Saddlers a penalty after Vale's Mark McGregor handled the ball.

Former Vale loanee Stefan Moore stepped up to take the kick but Martin read the ball and saved low at his left hand post.

Anthony Malbon replaced Luke Chapman and moments later Cardle was brought down in the area. The Scot stepped up for the spot kick and fired the ball past Walsall keeper Rene Gilmartin, he got a hand to it but it wasn't enough to keep the ball out of the net.

The Saddlers made a final substitution with Charlton Davies replacing Edrissa Sonko but that wasn't going to stop Ross Davidson from scoring his 84th minute goal as he broke free to fire the ball home.
