Summer signing Steve Thompson, who joined Vale from Middlesbrough, will soon be playing catch-up after tweaking a hamstring in training.

The 19-year-old striker was hoping to impress and press for a place in the starting line-up at the beginning of the new season, but will now be forced to rest for a couple of weeks so no further damage is done.

Thompson pulled up in training on Friday, but results of the scan show there is nothing to be too concerned about providing he takes things easy over the next few days.

Vale Physio, John Bower, said: "It is nothing to be over concerned about. We have just had the results of the scan and it shows just a few fibres were pulled apart.

"It looks like it has healed back up again already so we will make sure he doesn't overdo things and takes it gently for seven to ten days so it doesn't happen again."
